With the end of 2016 not seeming to be far off now, I thought it was time to look at some of the new music that’s set to be released in the final quarter of the year.
Rebecca Ferguson – Superwoman (Available Oct. 14th)
New single ‘Bones’ available now!
After releasing her Billie Holiday cover album Lady Sings the Blues last year, Rebecca Ferguson is back with new material set for release this Friday. Superwoman, her first original release in 3 years, is Ferguson’s fourth studio album since she came second on the X Factor back in 2010.
Fronted by lead single Bones, a cover of New Zealand singer-songwriter Ginny Blackmore’s 2013 song, the album acts as a comeback of sorts for the Liverpudlian singer having faced some tough times in recent years.
Superwoman is sure to see Ferguson do what she does best with her strong, unique voice and critically-acclaimed songwriting abilities sure to set the album on fire. The LP is likely to pull at the heartstrings but ultimately have Ferguson come out stronger than ever (judging by the title) as she faces the demons that have tried to take her down.
Melanie C – Version of Me (Available Oct. 21st)
New single ‘Anymore’ available now!
Of all the members of the Spice Girls, Melanie C is the one that’s had the greatest solo career after the group parted ways. She is back this month with her new release ‘Version of Me’, her SEVENTH studio album release since she hung up her Sporty Spice tracksuit.
This new album is Melanie’s first in four years, and sees the singer returning to original material after the release of her Musicals cover album ‘Stages’ back in 2012.
The first single from the record, ‘Anymore’, brings to mind ‘Think About It’ from Melanie’s critically acclaimed fifth album ‘The Sea’. Combined with her Sons of Sonix duet that is also included on the album, it seems that this new release may dip its toes in a more modern disco/house sound than some of her earlier music.
If her back catalogue of albums and singles is anything to go by then this new album will likely be another work of vocal lyrical art, even if it doesn’t light up the charts like her debut did back in 1999. Melanie C is an artist that has always proven herself in the music industry, and any new release by her is sure to be one worth listening to.
Lady Gaga – Joanne (Available Oct. 21st)
New single ‘Perfect Illusion’ available now!
It feels like it’s been forever since Lady Gaga released an album.
Her most recent music release was 2014’s ‘Cheek to Cheek’, a jazz-filled duet album alongside Tony Bennett, but it was back in 2013 that Gaga’s last solo effort was released when she gave the world ‘Artpop’.
In that time the star has been making a name for herself on the screen with her award-winning performance in American Horror Story, as well as giving highly-acclaimed vocal performances at events like the Superbowl and the Academy Awards.
Now she’s back with her new album ‘Joanne’, a musical release that Gaga hopes will make people put down their phones and make the most of the world they have around them. The album is inspired by Gaga’s late aunt Joanne who died when she was 19, and acts as her motivation for living the life that she was never able to.
The album’s first single release ‘Perfect Illusion’ received a mixed reception upon it’s debut, with fans and critics alike divided in their opinions of the long-awaited tune. Whilst some enjoyed new rock vibe and vocal display on the track, others felt it was an underwhelming return for the superstar with the song lacking much depth.
‘Joanne’ looks to be another record by Gaga that has a different sound from its previous releases, something that few artists ever really achieve in their music career. Whether you’re a fan of her new sound or not, you can’t fault the woman for constantly evolving in her music and never being afraid to experiment with her sound and lyrics. This album will show another side to Gaga, one that’s more stripped back and what haters of the singer’s original sound and style would call normal.
With Gaga’s vocal prowess and excellent lyrical ability set to light this album on fire, ‘Joanne’ is likely to be one of the biggest releases of 2016.
Emeli Sandé – Long Live The Angels (Available Nov. 11)
New single ‘Hurts’ available September 16th!
Everywhere you looked in 2012 Emeli Sandé was there. She had the biggest selling album of the year in the UK, she performed at both the opening and closing ceremony of the London Olympic games, and she had a whole load of top 20 singles that all sold exceptionally well.
Four years later Emeli is looking to recreate her 7x Platinum success with follow up album ‘Long Live The Angels’, a release many people have been eagerly awaiting for a long time.
Explosive lead single ‘Hurts’ sees Sandé in a stronger form than before, both vocally and lyrically, and promises that nothing will be held back on this new album. Likely to see a blend of emotional and powerful ballads, with some uptempo numbers thrown in for good measure, this sophomore release will surely prove to be yet another masterpiece in the art of making music. A lot of people can expect to see ‘Long Live The Angels’ wrapped up under their tree this Christmas.
There isn’t much that needs to be known about an Emeli Sandé album in order to judge how successful it will be. She has the voice, the songwriting, the music…now she just needs her audience.
Little Mix – Glory Days (Available Nov. 18th)
New single ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ available Sunday 16th October
For a long time not much was actually known about new music from Little Mix apart from that it was happening soon.
The girls recently announced that their new album would be out before the end of the year, and I’ve got high hopes for them after their previous release – 2015’s Get Weird – was given 2x Platinum certification by the Official Charts Company last month. The album is their most successful yet, both critically and commercially, with all single releases surpassing 400,000 sales, including their biggest-selling song and Summer smash hit Black Magic.
This new release would be their fourth studio album and will surely be as infectious and enjoyable as Get Weird, maybe with a return to the more R&B sound of 2013’s Salute. The album will more than likely be full of sexiness, flamboyancy, emotion and, the thing these four girls do best, fun!
Little Mix still have a lot to prove to many people who discredit them for their roots. However, as the only group to win the X Factor, and one of the few alumni to display longevity in the mainstream industry years after appearing on the show, album number 4 is likely to quieten down some of the critics when they realise these girls aren’t going anywhere.
Their new single ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ will debut on the X Factor UK results show this Sunday, and will be available to download straight after.
